I hope to be able to fulfil a promise and use this opportunity to ask for your generosity. My dear friend Sandra (Sandy Tudor) Goodwin lost her last fight to cancer. Sandy was an extraordinary active woman who was passionate about reenacting history, As a Captain in The Federation of the Wars of the Roses Society, she was instrumental in recreating many battles. When she was diagnosed with cancer, she was determined not to allow it to interfere with her work or hobby. A poem was written for her by a volunteer at the hospital and this line describes her indomitable attitude “Armour gleaming, and flags unfurled, Re-enactment never ends”. During her chemotherapy, we joked about how she had complained of having unruly hair much of her life. When it started to fall, we talked of how synthetic wigs were so uncomfortable and I made a promise, that I would grow my hair in order that someone else could use it. At that time, my hair was quite short, but I resolved that I should grow it. Too late for her, but she always thought of other people before herself. It has taken me two years to grow out all the layers so that it will be suitable for wig making. With the kind permission of the Tewkesbury Medieval Festival I am undertaking this promise in front of the people she knew, in the hope that I can raise money to help others. Sandy was passionate about teenagers being able to belong to an organisation that would give them a purpose and keep them active. Sea Cadets is a National charity which helps so many youngsters gain confidence, skills and qualifications. My local unit at Port Talbot raises so much money for charity such as the Sue Ryder Foundation, among others, yet is in dire need of funds itself to renovate a slipway to safely access boating training. I feel the time is right to request your kind assistance in order that we can support these youngsters in achieving new skills and qualifications. I am hoping that your generosity will help my cause.
