Ludmilla and I are blessed. We are in good health and able to at least have a crack at running and hopefully completing The Manchester Marathon.
The guy we are fund-raising for has been less lucky:
12 months ago Mat suffered a devastating brain hemorrhage caused by a heart infection. He was on life support in a coma for two weeks, following emergency lifesaving brain surgery. He has been left unable to communicate, read, write or speak. He is severely limited in his mobility with a paralysed right arm and very limited movement in his left leg. He still requires intensive Physio and speech therapy to enable him to eventually live independently. The NHS don't have the resources to be able to offer adequate therapy long term.
So The Riff Raff Society are getting a treatment/physio fund together to support Mat and his partner Jan. We loved the brief description on the Riff Raff website regarding Mat's middle finger militant spirit and it's with that in mind that we see the massive challenge of training for and completing this marathon as a metaphoric mirror image of the challenge ahead for Mat.
