Armes Wood is 2.4 acres of urban woodland behind Sainsbury's in Sudbury. The William Armes carpet factory once occupied the site but since 2004 it has been neglected. Once a working chalk pit supplying to industry, it has now been colonised by self seeding sycamore and acacia. Eden Rose took responsibility for Armes Wood in September 2018 and thanks to the hard work of our volunteers we have planted over 900 trees including Hazel, oak; elm; rowan; Wild cherry; field maple; silver birch; hawthorn and hornbeam. Additionally in early 2022 we planted a mature mixed orchard and a number of small leaf limes. We also created a pond.
From Matt, Kim & Josh
The intention at present is to plant early in January 2023. Volunteers to do so are most welcome. Even if you are not capable of digging yourself please come along and just wander around the wood.

About William Armes Wood planting
Depending upon the amount raised we will plant mature trees in early 2023. These will be a doubling of our present orchard plus wild service and sweet chestnut trees. We have decided to plant fewer more mature trees due to our experience in last summer's drought. We also need some of the money raised to be used to stabilise/make safe a number of large trees which overhang neighbours gardens. This is a legal duty.
