Gamelan Naga Mas uses Javanese and Balinese music as a route into creativity, expression and group music-making for children, local residents and people with additional support needs. Anyone can join and take part in rehearsals and performances using the wonderful ensemble of instruments known as the Spirit of Hope Gamelan. Regular free rehearsals introduce new players to this unique music, and group members perform regularly at community days, festivals and concerts.
Why the community needs usGamelan is a very accessible form of music making. The basic techniques are simple but the range of instruments offers enormous potential for skill development, while the music evolves from simple cyclical forms to complex interlocking rhythms. Playing the gamelan fosters co-ordination, confidence, creativity and expression. Naga Mas is unique in Scotland in providing access to this special musical experience with skilled volunteers and tutors capable of working with people of all abilities.
Our impact on the communityNaga Mas members are active in using the Gamelan in the community as an educational and therapeutic resource in a variety of learning settings. Feedback from schools workshops confirms the experience supports pupils' education about music, other cultures and working together, while performing increases self-esteem and confidence. Carers of adults with additional support needs have reported benefits to participants around enjoyment, self-esteem, interaction, active participation and inclusion.
