Gilead helps women who have had a range of experiences including addictions, homelessness and domestic abuse by providing housing and support. Everyone has their own room and share the community facilities. This helps to reduce isolation and encourages people to support each other. We are based on a working farm and provide work experience in agriculture, administration, catering, gardening and horticulture. We can accommodate up to 10 residents at any one time. Most stay for approximately 3-12 months.

Why the community needs us
We network with local and wider organisations to help us achieve our aims. We take people off the streets, out of prison, out of destructive situations and help them to get back on their feet. Referrals may come from doctors, agencies, churches and outreach organisations. Sometimes people self refer or worried families get in touch. We give people the extra support they need to prevent them from being made homeless again, committing crimes, being led back into addictive lifestyles, and generally not coping with life. They gain hope while with us that they can change their lives, become employable and useful to society. Most of all we give them back their dignity.

Our impact on the community
Gilead started in 1991 and historically have supported both men and women. In March 2020 we changed to an only women's centre due to the influx of enquiries and have been full for many of those months since. We do have rooms currently available as some women have moved on recently, some into employment or education and safe housing, which is fantastic.

Most women are funded for their stay by receiving housing benefit and their food and sundry costs come from their own individual benefits or funds. We do as a charity have to fundraise for half of all our income to provide the work experience and extra support we offer our residents.
