Glenburn Stroke and Disability Support Group provides people recovering from strokes with the skills to cope with life after a stroke by running weekly meetings in a Resource Centre in Paisley. It aims to provide their members with a chance to get involved with something new, reduce the feelings of isolation and exclusion and increase confidence in their recovery. Glenburn works with around 25 people each year in Renfrewshire. Some people are referred from the hospital and some are self-referred
Why the community needs usProviding art therapy to stroke sufferers in the entire Renfrewshire area. We are a self-help group affiliated to the medical charity: Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland. We meet every Wednesday morning to draw and paint under the auspices of a professional art tutor. We require ongoing support to enable us to hire an art tutor, pay for hall hire and art materials.
Our impact on the communityThe Group provides respite for carers but more importantly gives victims the impetus to use their limbs that may have been affected by their stroke. Confidence plays a big part and each week/month we see gradual improvements to members. This environment creates a real opportunity to return to a near normal life.
