Holloway Neighbourhood Group is a multi-purpose community organisation set up to improve lives and strengthen our community. We provide a range of services from two bases (the Old Fire Station and the Stress Project). These include: * Lunch club and social activities for older people * IT and ESOL programmes * Food growing and gardening workshops * Back to work schemes * Counselling and therapeutic treatments for people suffering from stress or other mental health issues * Community events
Why the community needs us
Holloway is an area of severe and multiple social deprivation, yet bordered by areas of extreme wealth. Our centres sit between three particular zones that are among the 10% most disadvantaged areas in the country. 44% of people in the local area live in high-density social housing, and claims for incapacity benefit and employment support are higher than both the Islington and London averages.
Our impact on the community
Last financial year (2010-11) we recorded around 20,000 visits to our centres. Most of our service users live locally. At least 60% come from black and minority ethnic communities and most are aged between 40 and 65. Men make up under a third of our overall user numbers. We help people feel part of a community. We strengthen their resilience. We provide resources to help people help themselves and each other.
