The Kernos Centre provides counselling and support to people with emotional and psychological difficulties. We have been operating since April 2003, in Friars Street, Sudbury. We are a small registered charity providing professional counselling & psychotherapy services to anyone in need. In particular to help those not provided for through current statutory provision, especially those who have no means of financing counselling support. We have helped over 4,400 clients from age 7 to 93, from our local community!
Why the community needs us
Adolescents receiving crisis counselling can prevent missing school, running away, self-harming, turning to alcohol or drugs and becoming violent and a nuisance to the wider community. It empowers them with life skills to cope better in the future and raises their self-esteem. G.P's psychiatrists and mental health teams regularly refer to us.
Since Covid, we have adapted our service, to include online video counselling and telephone counselling sessions. Counsellors also go into schools, to provide counselling for children, if that is thought by the school, parents and the child to be in the young person's best interest. Teenagers, as well as adults, can have Zoom sessions for their counselling, if that suits their situation.
Our impact on the community
Adults seen at the Kernos Centre reported being better able to cope, increased self-esteem, valuing themselves and others more and more importantly being able to get and hold down a job - something they may not have done for years. Schools reported that pupils attended more, achieved better grades and had less aggressive behaviour. Bullying was significantly reduced. Targeting adolescents now makes them a better individual and less likely to drop out of society.
