Ledbury | Community Support & Development
The Ledbury Allotment Association Charity provides allotments and affiliated services throughout the community regardles of age, gender or gardening expertise. The Association maintains the view that the ability to grow one's own fresh food sustainably, whilst fostering biodiversity is of life-long benefit both mentally and physically. Importantly, it also creates lasting friendships and it saves the family money.
Why the community needs usBy provision of free plots, we help numerous disadvantaged groups in the community such as the Acquired Brain Injury Unit and likewise the disabled with plots specifically dedicated and designed for their use. Our volunteers provide both practical & physical help. We loan tools and machinery, give people surplus plants and produce and provide seeds & equipment etc.,to assist and support the in-school "gardening for food growing" educational programs that encompasses all 7 local primary schools.
Our impact on the communitySince incorporation in 2009, our Association has raised the money to buy a field that provides 74 allotment plots for local people; surplus rental income from the field forms the basic bedrock supporting our social enterprise initiatives. One key initiative is our funding of food growing educational visits that currently has helped to inspire over 350 primary school pupils. Last year we also raised sufficient funds that enabled us to create a community orchard adjacent to our allotment site.
