Mansfield Woodhouse | Health & Wellbeing
Children explore how to plant, care for and harvest the vegetables, fruit and flowers that are grown at Little Roots. Local primary schools visit our site. We run an after school gardening club in term time and summer gardening club during the holidays. We promote health & wellbeing through physical activity, social interaction and the accessibility to fresh produce. We encourage the sharing of knowledge and experience between generations. We provide an opportunity to learn, play and have fun.
Why the community needs usMembers of our local community can visit the Little Roots allotment at any time. Little Roots is free, local and easily accessible to schools and families. A time for children to play safely in a welcoming place, to socialise and spend time with others sharing experiences. Schools have access to an outdoor, engaging and stimulating learning environment which offers children of all ages an understanding and appreciation of how food grows and where it comes from.
Our impact on the communityFrom March 2017 to October 2017 we have welcomed an incredible 1271 visitors. Our visitors are from our local primary schools, our After School Gardening club, Summer Gardening club, the Children's Centre under 5's group, our local college and our open day events. The knowledge of how food grows reminds us that not everything is answered in an instant. Vegetables and fruits 'ready washed' and packaged are a world away from picking and tasting a ripe tomato or the fun of digging for potatoes.
