We have 40 girls who engage in Liverbirds Morris Dancing; without the engagement of us as a community group in the area, the girls would be involved in substance misuse and anti social behaviour. We have now been training for 12 months and with the help of the local Orange Lodge hall, we train twice a week. We are all continuosly fundraising as we have struggled to raise enough to enter the competitions, but we try and attend to watch the shows and to learn more skills.
Why the community needs usBy hosting the Morris Dancing, we provide something for the community to look forward too; although our dance troupe consists off mostly girls, we are open to all genders and ages. We feel that with this community engagement and activity in place, the youths now have something to do with their time away from their troubled background. We have recognised the need for this activity in the deprived area, and are determined to keep it going.
Our impact on the communityWith the teaching of dance and the enthusiasm and commitment from the participants, our desired outcome is to enter the weekend competitions. We are eager for all to be engaged in the dancing, sponsoring and fundraising to help sustain this much needed activity. The transformation that the girls are going through is an additional outcome, they are behaving accordingly and respecting their community.
