MND is a rapidly progressive, fatal disease. It attacks the motor neurones that send messages from the brain to the muscles, leaving people unable to walk, talk or feed themselves. Around 5,000 people in the UK have MND at any one time and on average 5 people die every day from MND. With no cure, half die within 14 months of diagnosis. We never lose hope. We strive to find a cure for MND and to support everyone with this devastating disease in the Milton Keynes area.
Why the community needs usApart from the money we donate towards research, all the money raised by the MK Branch is spent locally in MK1 - MK19 + MK46 . The MK Branch ensures that the local care structure enables all of the people affected with MND (ie people with MND, their carers, family and friends) in our area to be helped. This structure has three co-ordinated elements of support from the Statutory Services, our trained volunteer Association Visitors and the MND Association Care Service who provide equipment.
Our impact on the communityThe Branch is staffed by 14 volunteers and we have over 40 committed supporters and groups who raise money for us. Over the last three years, the branch has invested over £90,000 on equipment and services not readily available from the statutory services. This is in addition to the Equipment Loans from the Association. All requests require the approval of relevant health and care professionals, as well as the Association.
