Mothertongue provides a range of therapeutic support services for people from ethnic minorities who may have difficulty accessing mainstream services. All services are offered in the client's preferred language and in a culturally sensitive way. We offer counselling through paid, professional, multi-lingual therapists. We offer groups such as knitting and English for those who need additional support and a chance to improve their life skills in a safe environment.
Why the community needs usFrom external and internal evaluations our clients tell us that they have been become more confident, able to participate in community activities as well as find employment and live more productive lives. The counselling and support they have received from Mothertongue may have been time limited but they may have come back to volunteer or join a support group. In this way they have retained a link to us and been able to share with friends and family about the services we offer.
Our impact on the communityEach year we see 100-130 new clients for counselling. We evaluate how clients' feel before and after therapy. Evaluations show there is a 50-100% improvement in energy, optimism and coping strategies. Last year 28 clients and volunteers entered into employment after receiving support from Mothertongue. We have also delivered art work shops in schools for newly arrived children, mental health interpreting, parent groups, young interpreter training in schools and relationship counselling.
