We work creatively with groups in the community to tackle the issue of social exclusion and increase people's well-being, through utilising active music making. Groups we work with have a range of different complex needs and abilities. We work with adults who have learning disabilities, mental health issues, and dementia. We have had projects funded by Luton Borough Council and currently receive funding from Bedfordshire & Luton Community Foundation on behalf of London Luton Airport Ltd Fund.
Why the community needs usWe offer meaningful experiences through active music making in order to bring people together. We operate in a mainstream venue, thus allowing participants to enjoy being a part of a thriving and diverse arts centre and not being restricted to day centres or other clinical/health care settings. We use established musical techniques to help people explore and express themselves, thereby enhancing their sense of well being and identity.
Our impact on the communityWe have worked with individuals & groups of adults with learning disabilities, mental health and dementia. We have employed a variety of outcome measures to show the efficacy of our work, (Goal Assessment Scale, Likert scales, videotaping sessions and end of project interviews). Results so far have clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of active music making for enhancing communication, expression, wellbeing, reducing isolation, improving self confidence and increasing the sense of identity.
