The Hope Centre began in 1974 when Michael Mulligan started a free food handout for rough sleepers in Central Northampton. This grew into the Northampton Soup Kitchen & finally developed into the Hope Centre, a Day Centre offering a wide range of services & practical support to Northampton's homeless. We still offer life's basics - hot meals, showers & clothes. We also run a range of workshops and initiatives in the local community to prevent people falling into acute hardship. Through our 'Hope in the Community' initiative we offer a range of life skills workshops & activities to improve self esteem & give people facing hardships social skills which enable them to lead fulfilled lives. We also run three Food Clubs, providing food, advice and support to people finding it hard to make ends meet.
Why the community needs us
The street homeless, vulnerably housed and people struggling with the cost of living and acute poverty are growing in number. The lack of affordable housing, rising rents and high cost of living has exacerbated the problem. Homelessness and hardship need not be a permanent situation, with the right support, advice and through partnership working, we can help people regain their lives.
Our impact on the community
Many of our members engage in positive community activities and move on to lead fulfilling lives. We work hard to develop initiatives that help people transition from hardship and reliance on our services to self-sufficiency. Many of our members now volunteer within our Centre taking on tasks such as cooking, cleaning, reception & general building maintenance. Others are now actively engaged in programs which reduce their dependence on alcohol, drugs & tobacco and provide support with debt, mental health issues. These approaches enable our clients to live a more positive & progressive lifestyle. We often meet with people we have supported in the past, now in meaningful employment. Homelessness should always be temporary, and with the right support, it is a hardship not repeated. We achieve this time and time again, and are very proud of our work.
We are also proactive in the community, working on partnership projects that help people facing hardship in the local community with the goal of early intervention. Our Food Clubs, Grow! Cook! Eat!, and Community Training Partnership Programme, work to strengthen resilience and self-sufficiency in the local community.
