Northampton | Community Support & Development
To support Somali women and girls, many of whom are single mothers, suffering isolation and exclusion by offering mutual support, friendship and opportunities to access education, skills building and social interaction. Typically, by offering language translation, we can help with social issues like housing, benefits, employment, medical issues, schools and education for the children. This support helps women access local services and helps prevent isolation and poverty.
Why the community needs usThe Somali Women & girls organisation has been meeting in Northampton now since 2000. We provide support specifically for Somali women who without our support and ability to translate in their language would have nowhere else to go. Somali women children are encouraged to take part in our activities to gain a sense of involvement and self worth in their community. Their opinions are valued and put into practice through our programme.
Our impact on the communityTypically we meet with on average 40 local women and their children each week, providing all kinds of support as shown above. Each week we offer activities like weekly girls only basketball and women and girls only swimming every Saturday. Both activities help girls to overcome huge personal barriers like leaving the house, freely exercising and gaining a certificate of achievement. These sessions give a confidence boost and the chance to socialise with other Muslim women from all backgrounds.
