Portsmouth Music Club offers performance opportunities for established musicians and encourages emerging talent. We welcome solo artists as well as vocal, piano, strings, wind and brass ensembles. Our concerts are classical but approachable in style; they include an annual programme of new music by local Portsmouth Composers as well as performances by outstanding musicians from local schools and colleges, to whom we award a small bursary.
Why the community needs usThere is so little live classical music in Portsmouth, apart from expensive orchestral and chamber concerts featuring renowned artists. The age-range of our audiences is from teenagers to ninety-year-olds and music students often attend. We provide a valuable social and cultural event twice a month in an intimate chamber venue. However we struggle to maintain affordable ticket/subscription fees, given the rising cost of performers' fees and the rent of the venue and Steinway piano.
Our impact on the communityOur concerts are a Saturday evening focus for many of our members, providing stimulating enjoyment of professional standard players. Lively post-concert discussions often result in the formation of new friendships and broaden the interests of our listeners. Our performers benefit from an increasingly rare chance to try out programmes for future concerts and to gain invaluable platform experience.
