The SCRATCH Mission Statement is "to relieve the effects of poverty for families and individuals with needs recognised by approved referral agencies in Southampton and the surrounding area". This is achieved through work such as the Dorcas Project which redistributes donated furniture and household items to those facing hardship.
Why the community needs usOur clients face multiple issues of deprivation and hardship. Reasons for this include, escaping domestic violence, moving into permanent accommodation after being homelessness, having suffered a fire, flood or theft, or being unable to purchase new items of furniture because of debt. SCRATCH is able to help in the practical provision of furniture, household items, paint and toys. We also offer volunteering opportunities which helps people to gain new skills and increase their self-confidence
Our impact on the communityHelp from SCRATCH greatly improves the living conditions of many people, helping to create a feeling of self-worth and increased self-esteem and equipping them to make a fresh start. Providing furniture etc. helps to secure tenancies and reduces the likelihood of repeated instances of homelessness. Work experience placements give volunteers the skills and confidence they need to seek employment.
