Solar provides support to people infected and affected by HIV/Aids. Solar's HIV services are about supporting people who are often on the margins of society; suffering extreme financial hardship, poor housing and facing stigma and discrimination. Solar is committed to creating a dynamic and interactive community-wide education, prevention and reducing transmission programme for the 21st Century. Working in partnerships, using new media and volunteering to make a difference.

Why the community needs us

HIV impacts on all aspects of peoples lives. Solar are committed to raising awareness in our dual challenge to reduce transmission and stigma of HIV and provide caring support and advice to local people. In Northamptonshire there are currently over 780 people diagnosed with HIV, numbers are increasing by around 80 to 90 people a year. Volunteering with Solar provides not only an important opportunity to learn about HIV but also how you can actively make a real difference.

Our impact on the community

Our clients and their families feel more supported, informed and able to focus on improving their health, rather than 'worrying all the time about mounting debts' and risk of losing their home/ accommodation. Our home and hospital visits reduce isolation and help especially when there are mobility problems or for the newly diagnosed. Our centre, drop-ins and social events provide welcoming, safe space that clients esp value when they are facing familial and disclosure issues.
