St Luke's Hospice has been providing specialist palliative medical and nursing care, free of charge, to patients from Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall since 1982. A registered charity, we are passionate about offering our patients dignity and choice at a time in their lives when they may feel they have none. Our vision is to provide the best end of life care to all patients wherever their 'preferred place of care' might be - Hospice, hospital or home.
Why the community needs usEach year St Luke's Hospice cares for more than 3,500 terminally ill patients from across our catchment area. Statistics show that 1 in 5 people will develop a terminal illness at some point in their lives. Subsequently there is a growing need for specialist palliative and end of life care. In addition to this, seeing a family member or loved one go through a terminal illness can be extremely distressing. St Luke's also makes sure that families have the support they need.
Our impact on the communitySt Luke's cares for more than 3,500 patients every year. In 2012 adult admissions to the Turnchapel in-patient unit were 588. Our community nursing team based at Pearn carried out 5999 visits and Day Hospice was attended by 115 patients. Our Lymphoedema service based at Pearn cared for 406 patients and bereavement support totalled 554 contacts. All areas apart from bereavement support experienced a significant increase compared to 2009.
