Bury St Edmunds | Health & Wellbeing
Suffolk SOBS based in Bury St Edmund's is part of a national organisation, which exists to meet the needs of those bereaved by the suicide of a relative, friend or work colleague. We are a self-help organisation offering monthly meetings, email and telephone support. Suicide recognises no age, social, ethnic or cultural boundaries neither do we. This is a serious, intense and at times overwhelming grief that can last many years. SOBS aims to educate and remove the stigma attached to this subject
Why the community needs usWe are the only national charity that specialises in suicide bereavement, providing a free service for an indefinite period of time. We help survivors to deal with their grief in a healthy manner and acknowledge their pain. It is recognised by healthcare professionals that unresolved grief can have many side effects long term, both mentally and physically. Suicidal thinking is a common symptom of this grief and we aim to reduce the isolation felt by the individual which may trigger this feeling.
Our impact on the communityThrough raising our profile as a charity we hope we bring awareness to the general public and erase the stigma and shame often attached to this form of grief. We hope eventually the service we provide for our survivors will give them and their families the time and space they need to grieve and ultimately to heal together.
