The IT Centre aims to increase levels of employability, to minimise the digital divide and to reduce rural and social isolation by providing computer training for all ages and abilities. Working in partnership with fellow community organisations and initiatives ensures that our service reaches those most in need across a rural area with an ageing population. We help to build confidence, develop new skills and improve their lives through using computers, the internet and new technology.

Why the community needs us

The population of the Stewartry area of Dumfries & Galloway is spread out over a number of small towns and villages. By taking laptops to local venues, people feel included in their local community and have increased opportunities for social interaction. The Stewartry also has the highest number of older people in Scotland - it is essential that these people are not left behind when it comes to using technology to access information, keep in touch with friends and family and retain independence.

Our impact on the community

In 2011-12 the IT Centre provided over 4,200 hours of training across the Stewartry area of Dumfries & Galloway, enrolling over 200 new learners and encouraging over 100 existing learners to enrol on further courses. Being an ILA Scotland approved provider, 150 learners were able to access funding to reduce the cost of learning new skills. We also ran 12 free taster sessions for first time users and supported 3 local and 3 national campaigns encouraging participation from those hardest to reach.
