TS Fernie nurtures youth with nautical adventures, leadership skills, and qualifications.
Market Harborough Sea Cadets (TS Fernie), named after WWII destroyer HMS Fernie, is a charity offering nautical adventures and personal development for ages 9–17, plus volunteering and leadership for 18+. Based in Market Harborough, TS Fernie welcomes young people from local schools.
Our goals are to foster self-discipline, leadership, resilience, teamwork, and social skills through enjoyable, nautical-themed land and water activities modelled on Royal Navy and Royal Marines customs. Cadets progress through junior and senior ranks, gain BTEC Level 1–2 qualifications in leadership and teamwork, and can earn nationally recognised qualifications in first aid and water sports awards in sailing, rowing, windsurfing, paddle sports, and powerboating.
Studies have shown that cadet participation increases school attendance and behaviour, enhances self-efficacy, confidence, and employability, and fosters social cohesion, particularly among economically disadvantaged youth. Additionally, cadets benefit from improved mental and physical well-being and vocational qualifications.
Through community engagement and naval heritage, TS Fernie changes lives, building better futures one cadet at a time.
