Volunteer Action is a local charity which helps the elderly, the disabled and carers in Oundle, Thrapston and the 48 surrounding villages to keep their independence, stay living in their own homes and remain part of the community. We do this by providing them with transport for essential journeys and through that companionship. It is a door to door service. We also provide a Befriending Scheme - a home visiting service.
Why the community needs usWe benefit the community by allowing people to access essential medical appointments and are helped at the hospital or doctors and then taken safely home. The service is delivered by local volunteer drivers. The community car service covers a large rural area where access to essential services can be difficult for the elderly and isolated .The Befriending service offers friendship and companionship to those living alone or to carers (as indeed does the interaction with the volunteer drivers).
Our impact on the communityAccess to Medical Services, essential services e.g. shopping, optician, hairdresser etc, clubs and societies for the elderly and community facilities.Communication and interaction with a friend in what can be a lonely world.
