York CAB offer a free confidential, independent and impartial service offering advice on: welfare benefits, money, credit problems, employment, consumer rights, housing, neighbourhood disputes, education, healthcare, immigration, residency enquiries, human rights, family,personal issues. We provide specialist Welfare Benefits casework, specialist Debt casework and projects providing Family Money Advice, work with Travellers and Gypsies and partnerships with MIND and GP Surgeries.

Why the community needs us

Clients can obtain advice in a variety of ways: there is a general drop-in service from 9.30am - 12pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (West Office). A drop in service on a Wednesday evening 4pm - 5pm and general advice outreach sessions in Acomb, Huntington, Tang Hall and Wigginton. Specialist Homelessness Prevention, Debt and Family Money Advice outreach sessions can be arranged by telephone appointment. There is a telephone 'Adviceline' service and advice is also available on the internet.

Our impact on the community

In 2014-2015 there were over 5,000 clients and over 17,000 enquiries; debt - 5,820 and welfare benefits - 5,109 were the largest areas of advice that people sought. We assisted clients to gain £1,385,938 in unclaimed benefits they were entitled to and wrote off £1,826,506 of debt. 32% of our clients were disabled, 59% were female and 5% were BAME. The majority of our clients aged between 25 -64, with 35 - 49 year olds accounting for approximately 30% of clients seen.
