Bognor Regis | Community Support & Development
Bognor CAN works in partnership with a wide variety of organisations and volunteers to consult on, plan, develop, deliver and sustain a range of ongoing, accessible low cost activities in one of the most deprived areas in the UK, having the third highest child poverty in West Sussex. The activities offer opportunities that raise aspirations and confidence as well as skills. Bognor CAN also aims to tackle deprivation by offering free or low cost opportunities for local children and families.
Why the community needs usBy providing a diverse range of activities for all ages such as; accredited training, cooking skills, sport, art, craft, holiday activity schemes and more, we address many issues suffered by people living in very deprived areas. Many suffer due to poverty, poor health, social isolation, disability, poor educational attainment and who have little confidence or self esteem. By providing activities we aspire to improve their quality of life and support them to strive for a better future.
Our impact on the communityThrough participating in a training course, 13 local people with poor educational attainment have achieved an Open College Network accreditation 'Community Leaders'. Over 200 children & young people attended our four week activity scheme in 2011, learning new skills including cooking, needlework, art & crafts. Children and young people have gained 4 belt grading levels in the past year in our martial arts project.Older people have expressed the project has improved their quality of life.
