Welcome to the new SML Alumni and Supporters community. For a small regular donation the initiative gives former students, friends, relatives and our supporters the chance to play an active role in the College, and it’s exciting future.

At present 53 children and young people aged 9 to 17 years from Brighton & Hove, East and West Sussex attend SML College each day, with demand growing for more places. We now have two programmes - one in the morning and one in the afternoon -  in order to meet demand and to offer times to suit students.

Students come from families who have always wanted to educate their children in a different way, others have struggled with mainstream schooling and yet thrived when they have arrived with us. Some parents don’t want to put their children through the endless tests and mocks, or have come out of their previous school because they were bored in lessons where they finished work in ten minutes that took the rest of the class 40 minutes. They like being able to take GCSEs at any age (12 is the youngest) – and they value being able to broaden out with learning things that would not be on a school curriculum. Other children having been labelled in the system and looked for alternative ways to learn.

Parents often say how pleased they are to see such a transformation in their child after only a short time in the College. Mainly they say that they are happier, calmer, less anxious, and more switched on to learning. They are also amazed that the College can support just about any learning that their child wants to do. An outstanding education provider has the power to transform lives.

The best way to help SML to take out a regular monthly or annual donation.

In return we’ll email you updates and news about our work. We’ve made some suggested amounts, but of course these are dependent on your person circumstances. If applicable, you can also add Gift Aid to your donation as the initiative will operate within the guidelines required by HMRC for charities claiming Gift Aid. A regular donation really is the best way to help the student community thrive. Donations made to the scheme will support the Centre for Self Managed Learning (Registered Charity Number 1110315).
