The Well was established by the community, for the community.

A large number of people identified a severe need for urgent mental health support in the local community. They came together with a motto; ’if opportunity knocks, build a door’ and that is exactly what they did. In fact, they built a whole building! An unusual approach perhaps but based on feelings of desperation for much needed help and support.

Realising they couldn’t access the services they required, they began to build the entire place themselves, sourcing materials and working together as a team. Next was to furnish it with highly skilled therapists able to deal with the entire complex. Step by step, the community established what was needed, situated right in the heart of a unique setting with people of all ages using the various organisations within it.

As a result of their hard work and effort, The Well is now a warm, welcoming, safe space with a team of professional, compassionate and caring volunteers ready to support anyone in need of help.

Services have been designed in response to the needs requested by the local community. The Well team have responded to ensure that what is on offer, can be adapted to suit the individual or organisation. This means the right support can be delivered at the right time.

We are a large-scale grassroots project proving the demand for this specific formula of intervention with a trauma informed approach as a solid foundation to all we do.

We plan to help break the cycle of intergenerational trauma and the fatal effects of the ripples still felt to this day.

The Well are committed to developing innovative ways to engage with the community using a range of digital supports. We have several exciting and forward-thinking projects currently in development, bringing the best therapies and support to those who need it most. We intend to create a focus group made up of young people and members of The Well team to develop, test and implement our ideas.

Working in partnership is an important aspect of The Well. The team work closely with organisations such as Suicide Down to Zero, a charity that campaigns for an end to suicide in the local council district. Collaboration assists a stronger approach for all, in the hope that anyone in distress can reach out for support in times of crisis and ultimately decide that life is worth living.

The community wanted The Well so they built it, they invest in it, they use it and their efforts to date have saved lives.
