The Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge is something that I've personally wanted to complete for a long time now and really wanted to challenge myself doing. I also thought it would be a great idea to try and make the challenge more worthwhile and not just about me and try to raise some awareness and money for a local charity.
There are lots of worthy charities out there and in general the ones you hear more about on a daily basis are generally linked to cancer. Whilst I am not taking anything away from any of those fantastic charities I felt that after hearing about what Leeds Women’s Aid (LWA) do in the local community I thought they would be great to support and to try and raise some awareness and money for them.....
Leeds Women’s Aid was founded in 1972 by a group of women who were concerned about the lack of services to support women and children experiencing domestic violence. Since then they have grown to become one of the biggest Women’s Aid projects in the UK. They also work closely with other Women's Aid projects around the country so if women need help and recognise that they need to leave Leeds to be safe, they can find them a space in a women’s refuge in another part of the UK.
They are a women’s organisation, run by women for women. Their aim is to protect women and children from the damage that domestic violence can inflict on their lives.
LWA, like me, believe that women and children have the right to live their lives free from violence and fear.
