For 2020, the Disabled Sailors Association has designed and developed a state-of-the-art dinghy design, which will not capsize or sink. The needThe most important ‘NEED’ is to cater for all disabilities. Extensive research has found that most dinghies available to disabled people are certainly not suitable for all types of disability. Our policy is to refuse no one, and the extensively tested design of our dinghies reflect this.
With 25 years of research and experience in providing proper sailing for, uniquely all types of disabled people, in properly designed purpose-built craft, the clear mandate from disabled people was to design and build dinghies that were safer, easier to use and attractive to able-bodied and disabled alike. But most of all with easily interchangeable seats and controls could be sailed by any type of disability.
Our dinghies are used regularly and therefore need replacing due to wear and tear, to ensure that they are fit for purpose and meet or exceed crucial health and safety guidelines.

The offer The Disabled Sailors Association supports 36 different types of disability, with ages ranging from 8 to 92 years, male and female living with non-visible disabilities, visually impaired, people on the autistic spectrum, amputees, those with mobility needs and other complex needs. Over 40,000 disabled people have sailed over the last 25 years and last year Disabled Sailors Association/ we sailed at near capacity, providing 2,234 sailing places. Around 1,500 people sail our dinghies annually. Increasing and replacing the fleet will enable us to offer this opportunity to even more people.
Our disabled sailors were involved from start to finish in the design and development of the new dinghy and the first two prototypes have been built and are currently being tested.
The advantage of building the dinghies ourselves is that it drastically reduces production time from several months to a couple of weeks and they are far more cost effective.
The cost of producing each dinghy is £15,000 so any donation towards this will be greatly appreciated.
