Football Against Dementia is a project designed to “Bring the Football Family Together to help ANYONE affected by Dementia”
On Sunday 1st August 2021, in a gap in the pandemic we decided to organise a Dementia awareness football match at Great Yarmouth Town Football Club in memory of Mike Sutton, former GYTFC player and Father of the legendary professional footballer Chris Sutton after seeing Chris’s emotional BBC video regarding his families journey with Dementia.
We organised the event with absolutely no funding, but realised straight away the amount of people who had a genuine connection with Dementia and Football and also wanted to help people and families affected by Dementia.
We reached our to our local NHS to recognise their achievements and give them a game to remember against some genuine football legends.
The match attracted over 1000 people and a great day was had by everyone who attended.
After the match Chris Sutton and his family unveiled a memorial bench to his late father in an emotion filled ceremony. The bench is situated at GYTFC for all to see.
It was very clear to us that there was a real spark ignited on the day with businesses, groups and people very willing to come together and support people going through Dementia.
We are now creating a ’Club’ which aims to help anyone affected by Dementia.
Through lived with experience of Dementia we understand the financial impact the disease can have.
We are bringing together people and businesses to bring practical options to helping people with Dementia, we understand how difficult it is to find the kind of help and guidance to support people through the Dementia journey.
We will also work to help identify the causes and possible prevention of the disease.
We have signed some former footballing greats as Ambassadors to our cause including, Chris Sutton, Sammy Morgan, Richard Money and Ken Brown…with many more to come. We believe that this will give strength to our voice as we strive to help and bring positive change to anyone affected by Dementia.
We are asking for you to kindly consider donating to us to support us at an early stage and help with core costs to establish and build our project as we grow.
