Since 1955 Gilbert White's House and Gardens has been a museum dedicated to telling the stories of three explorers of the natural world - 18th century naturalist Gilbert White, the 'father of ecology', Frank Oates and Captain Lawrence Oates, who explored Antarctica with Captain Scott's Terra Nova expedition. We are a hive of conservation and education and have moved from strength to strength with our plans to develop further as a centre for natural history excellence and preserve this unique place of international importance. The environmental and historic legacy preserved at Gilbert White's House and Gardens has never been more relevant to modern life. White's meticulous recording of weather, wildlife, garden produce cultivation and agriculture provide valuable point of comparison today. The shrinking dimensions of the Antarctic ice cap across which Scott's expedition travelled with husky pulled sleds brings into sharp focus the effects of manmade climate change. Rapid increases in utility bills, staffing costs and a reduction in traditional funding streams means we are facing tough times. We need to raise £1,000,000 to protect Gilbert White and the Oates Collection for future generations. Our mission is clear - we want to inspire journeys of discovery into the natural world, for people and for the planet. If you care about the natural world, about biodiversity, about the education of future generations, about preserving heritage and encouraging exploration - we need your help!
