To mark a year and a bit since the start of lockdown, Ian Stevenson (Community Hub Manager) and Stephen Walters (Library Manager)successfully cycled around all Gateshead Council Libraries and Community Hubs on Thursday April 22nd (the weather was perfect!). This was an opportunity celebrate the work of libraries in lockdown and the amazing achievement of the emergency community hubs, where numerous library employees have been redeployed. Our way of saying thank you!

The ride was 47 gruelling miles and require a total of 2600’ ascent (approximately the height of the Cheviot).

We are delighted to be raising a little money for the amazing Comfrey Project. The Comfrey Project provides refugees and people seeking asylum across Tyneside with a safe, welcoming environment, which promotes personal well-being through a sense of place and belonging. This is achieved by various shared creative crafts including allotment gardening, cooking and crafts.

Our provisional route is: Gateshead Leisure Centre Hub - Edberts House - Pelaw library - Leam Lane Library / Hub - up to Wrekenton - down to Birtley Library / Community Hub - then up to Burnopfield, onwards to Chopwell Community Hub and Library - up and over to Crawcrook Library - back up to Winlaton Community Hub - down to Blaydon Library - Teams / Dunston Community Hub - and then onto the finish at Gateshead Central Library. We will try and call in at the Comfrey Project on our return to the library!
