I'm doing a middle-distance triathlon. That's a 1.9km swim, a 90km run and then finished off with a 21.1km run (yes, that's a half marathon)! This is the biggest physical challenge I have set myself in recent years and there have been moments during my training when I wasn’t sure I’d succeed. Luckily, I’ve had supportive networks round me to provide company for some workouts, a sounding board and answers for my training-related questions, and listening ears for ALL my fears and worries. Not everyone has that so I want to use my challenge to reduce some of the challenges others might face in developing those supportive social networks
I have recently stepped down as a charity Trustee for the Stuart Low Trust (SLT), a health and wellbeing charity in Islington, London who provide activities aimed at reducing social isolation. I’ve been a Trustee for over six years, providing expertise based on my knowledge of Islington and surrounding boroughs and the health needs of the population but it is time to move on and get fresh ideas and insight into the Board of Trustees.
Stuart Low Trust’s mission is to ensure that local people, especially those experiencing social isolation or mental distress, have access to the support they need for better health and wellbeing. They provide safe spaces and community activities focusing on arts, nature and wellbeing, including activities out of hours. They connect and support people for better health and wellbeing.
As one last hurrah, I want to fundraise for SLT. As a charity, all their funding comes from outside sources and I want to give some lovely cold hard cash to help facilitate their community-building activities.
If you're interested in my training journey (and a few other random musings), check out my fatgirlgettingfit blog.
