The Paul Popham Fund was set up by a family not dissimilar to ours. Primarily it started as a fundraising charity to support the Renal Unit, for Morriston Hospital. Their charter however has grown. They now provide peer support and training for renal patients across Wales. This year their big challenge is to raise enough money to assist with refurbishment works for the Children’s Renal Unit. I mean, imagine that? It’s tough being a family with renal needs. But for children to go through things that adults find debilitating... well that’s a whole new level of tough.
So to try and help them along, Lili & I have signed up for this years appeal. Kilometres for Kidneys. We have exactly 1 month, to complete our challenge. Lili will complete the 17 miles equivalent of the distance from Aberystwyth to Aberaeron. Whilst I will be doing the 64 miles equivalent of the distance from Carmarthen to the Children’s Renal Unit, Cardiff. The miles will be logged daily via Strava and verified by the Fund, to evidence that we’ve completed the walk.
If we hit our targets ahead of time, then we will continue to walk to try and reach a combined 100 Miles or more. Like Tycroes’ female versions of Forrest Gump. We will keep going.
Since 2012 Rhys has received amazing support and care from the Renal team in Morriston. As a family we are so very lucky to be surrounded by the most amazing support network. But living with renal disease is tough, not just for Rhys but for the whole household. There may be a time where we will need that peer support, and it’s reassuring to know that the Paul Popham Fund is there, with the right words and comfort for us.
Its been a tough and all round bonkers year for everyone. So even if you are not in a position to sponsor us... just share our page. You will be helping us hit our target just by doing that.
Thank you
Beth & Lili xx
