Sheryl's 5k for Lifeafterhummus

During a parents meeting at my sons nursery, they mentioned that the local benefit society who are named Lifeafterhummus would be setting up a clothing exchange/ donation point within the nursery and were looking for local parents to volunteer to support the project. I put myself forward, that's when I met Farrah. 

I discovered LAH was a local hub full of beautiful bright individuals who volunteer their time to contribute to the community. 
One evening, I had given Farrah a hand with delivering some food and produce to an after school club 'plot 10'.A lady named Sally who had worked in the club for many years greeted us. !). She was thrilled to receive all the readymade food and fruit. I could see she was making a mental list of what she could keep and prepare for the next couple of days. She began saying things like ‘some of the kids haven’t eaten since lunch time so this will be good’ and “I’m sure this child hasn’t had a hot meal in a few days so this will go down well” I began to crumble. Farrah explained that Sally knew some of the children and families well enough to know who would benefit from the surplus food and who might need a helping hand. 

Every week, a small group of volunteers go and pick up all food donations for 45 stores. Which equates to 5 tonnes of surplus food every month! It is crazy to think that this would otherwise be chucked away.

For a few months I thought about what charity I should raise money for, but after meeting Farrah and seeing what the centre does, it was a no brainer. I want to run for LAH, not just to raise money (although that would be great) but to also raise awareness of what places like this can do for the community.   What I’ve come to realise is that perhaps it’s our neighbour, the people we see at church, our children’s school friends or the mum we smile to at drop off that are the people that may need a helping hand.
