All great ideas start off in the pub supposedly!
A few friends and I were trying to come up with challenges to get active and improve our health and fitness, after a few years off mainly raising kids, eating unhealthily, watching TV and when time allows going to the pub. The idea chosen was to cycle 100 miles in a single day. At this point I had not owned a bike for over 20 years and the thought of sliding into lycra did not fill me with any confidence!
So, a route was chosen from Wigan (my hometown) to a campsite near Barmouth. This will involve cycling approximately 180km (111 miles) and climbing over 1700m of the lovely Welsh hills. We are aiming to complete this challenge on 22 July 2021.I have decided that if I must put lycra on and cycle such a crazy distance I should do it for charity.
The charity I have chosen is Jump Space Ltd. It is a facility, that we have been using as a family for a few years, supporting our son Daniel in improving his general physical skills. As some of you know, Daniel has a genetic condition that has resulted in him having epilepsy, alongside other complex needs.
Jump Space is a specialist centre offering Rebound Therapy, Trampolining and Sensory play for disabled children and young people many of whom are unable to access other forms of sport and activity. It provides a safe, accessible, fun, understanding and non-judgemental environment. It promotes inclusivity by providing somewhere that the whole family can access, by encouraging siblings to participate in activities alongside their brothers and sisters, and by creating a welcoming place for parents, carers and support workers.
Like many small charities they have been hit by Covid and funding is required to make sure that people with profound and complex needs have an opportunity to access activities. Furthermore, Jump Space are wanting to extend the range of activities offered to include more activities tailored to meet the needs of people with different impairments.
