We did it! Thank you for your donation. We really appreciate your support.
On Saturday 8th October 2016 we abseiled from the highest point on the tower, and the sun came out just in time! We enjoyed stunning views over Northampton. It was great to be cheered on by friends and supporters from below.
We both work as Assistant Managers for Live at Home Northampton, a community-based charity that provides friendship and support to over 160 older people in Northampton.
Older people can become isolated because they do not have family living nearby or are suffering after an illness or the death of a life-long partner. Live at Home Northampton aims to reduce loneliness and social isolation for older people by providing sensitive support and encouraging social interaction. This enables members to remain active and living independently in their own homes for as long as practically possible.
Through 1:1 befriending support and regular social events, we help many older people to establish new friendships and to remain active and feeling valued. We run weekly lunch clubs, fitness, craft and games groups, plus regular outings in the local community. This gives our members the opportunity to meet and socialise in a safe and supportive environment. Live at Home also provides information and advocacy for older people.
Live at Home Northampton is an amazing community resource that enhances the well-being of many older people. We love our jobs and find the work very rewarding. It's wonderful to see members enjoy each other's company and grow in confidence. We aim to help our members to enjoy life, regardless of age and ability.
We chose to abseil down the National Lift Tower because it's a well-known landmark in Northampton and the surrounding area. It is over 400 feet (127 metres) high and was built in 1982 to test lifts by the Express Lift Company. It is still used as a research and development facility, as well as being the National Abseil Centre.
