3 years ago I suffered a traumatic experience which resulted in my life spiralling rapidly out of control. Basic daily tasks became impossible, and most situations created a debilitating level of anxiety. I received a diagnosis of severe anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
With intensive support from psychiatrists, psychotherapists, medication, family and friends, my mental state slowly began to improve. A year on from the trauma, I began to share my story online through social media platforms and also blogs with student minds.
I began to realise my mental health struggles were the hardest, yet best things to have ever happened to me. This may sound strange. But, I discovered a burning passion to support other people. I want to limit the suffering of other people in this world as much as I possibly can.
That’s where I found Off the Record. I was offered a job as a listening support worker 18 months ago, and have loved every single second. It’s an incredible charity. . Each and every worker has made positive contributions to a young persons life, and I’m so proud to be part of it.
Not only do Off the Record help so many young people, but they also support their staff to a great extent. They have supported me more than I ever thought imaginable. I feel so valued, and they have really helped increase my self-confidence and belief. With their help, I have realised my mental illness will always be with me, but that is ok. I will always be grateful for all they have done for me, and the people of Bath and North East Somerset.
I want to run the bath half to raise as much money as I possibly can for this incredible organisation. Talking about my issues saved my life, and this service is vital to allow other young people to do the same. £30 pays for a counselling session for a young person. That could improve their quality of life beyond belief.
Please, please give all you can to allow young people in BANES to continue to receive the support they deserve.
