Brighton and Hove Night Shelter is currently being piloted over February and March 2012. 7 Churches from Brighton and Hove have taken one night of the week each to host the night shelter. Guests are received upon referral and are welcomed at 8pm, and will be given a hot meal and a safe, warm, bed to sleep in and in the morning they will be offered breakfast. The Night Shelter is overseen by a co-ordinator and run daily by volunteers.

Why they need our service

Brighton has a growing number of rough sleepers. The official count is 37 (up from 14 last year) which is huge considering that central London's official figure is 25, and probably represents a real figure of 100. St Patrick's Night Shelter, which has provided beds for rough sleepers for a number of years, closed on 31 January 2012. In response, 7 churches from Brighton and Hove are each taking one night a week each to host a Night Shelter for emergency housing for up to 15 people.

Plan and expected results

As a result of the night shelter, people who would otherwise be sleeping rough on the streets have the opportunity to stay with us for up to 28 days until they find a more permanent housing solution. Links will be strengthened with local housing agencies as we work together to gain referrals. Volunteers from around the city will work together from a range of backgrounds to keep this night shelter going over the winter months, 7 days a week.
