We are two SGS college students, James Collier and Toby Spencer, trying to raise money for Southern Brooks C P so they can buy gardening supplies for people in difficult situations. We are cycling from Bristol to Bath and back to try raise money and will be doing challenges and taking pictures along the way. The cycle will be taking place on the 16th of May, starting at SGS Filton; cycling to the Roman Bath house and then back to SGS. Thank you for reading and we hope you can support us so we can get as much money as possible to Southern Brooks!
Here is a case study from Southern Brooks themselves to show how they can help: Mark was referred to us via a Social Prescriber, and the first time he attended the Pound Road community allotment, he experienced a panic attack at the anxiety caused by coming along to a new place to meet new people. He told us that he hadn’t left his flat,(other than to visit the local shop) for 3 months. It was evident immediately, that he had been traumatised by recent events in his life, and needed to talk about it to Peers. He needed encouragement but he started to attend regularly, and he soon understood that he was in safe company, and he began to share his troubles. We have found that when people are involved in a simple gardening task, challenging subjects can be discussed without people feeling the spot light is on them, an ease is created which gives them the confidence to speak up. As his involvement progressed, Mark told us he felt understood and that the warm welcome of the group was helping him to relax, he did not get anxious attending the sessions, and took great pleasure in helping maintain the allotment. He then began to make friends with his peers! After this he decided to participate in the 4 week Introduction to Mindfulness course, alongside some of his new friends - he told me that he experienced a sense of peace and calm which had been missing in his life, and would like to practise more mindfulness.
