The Cause
Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees is urging people to make a difference this Christmas and spread a little cheer by making an effort to visit older relatives and neighbours during the festive period. There are 34,000 older people living by themselves in Calderdale and Kirklees. The Age UK C&K Christmas Appeal aims to ensure no one has no one this Christmas and prevent many thousands from being left isolated and alone.
How the funding will be spent
The funds raised will be spent on our companionship services because we believe that no-one should have no-one, not only at Christmas but throughout the year. We offer companionship centres, telephone befriending and befriending volunteers who visit older people in their own homes, offering a friendly face each week, plus a range of community support and activities. "I look forward to her visits. It makes you feel like you are not forgotten" says Joan, a befriending client.
How this will benefit the community
Feelings of loneliness can have dramatic effects on a person's mental and physical health. Research has shown that loneliness can be as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. And these feelings are can be amplified at Christmas time when family and friends traditionally get together.
