Fun Day is an annual event organised by CREst volunteers. It offers information & advice from areas including Housing Services, Mental Health Support, Domestic Violence, 'Learn English at Home' [LEAH] & others representing a broad spectrum of community life. We combine this with entertainment such as a Fun Fair, Mobile Zoo, Face-painting & a DJ/host. The majority of the attractions are free with rides, tombola & BBQ offered at hugely subsidised rates to encourage full family participation.
Why they need our serviceThe Cambridge Road Estate is amongst the top 2% most deprived areas in the country with a refugee population of 38%. The CREst Fun Day fosters community spirit & offers residents who are often unwilling to seek advice or help easy access to services and information that they may not even be aware of. The combination of entertainment & information encourages resident participation & provides an affordable family day out. CREst raise funds throughout the year to subsidise the event.
Plan and expected resultsAt the Fun Day residents seek help & advise in areas they would normally avoid. Eg: a local GP offers blood pressure & diabetes checks. Many of the other agencies attending make a special effort to find fun ways to engage with residents who they normally have problems engaging with. This results in increased knowledge & wellbeing and a greater uptake of the services available. Of equal importance is the increase in community cohesion that comes from neighbours enjoying a family day out.
