FoodCycle Lewisham tackles food waste, hunger and loneliness. Our project founded and managed by local charity Lewisham Local, has been serving meals in Catford since 2016. We host between 40 and 50 guests every week for a nutritious, sit down, three-course meal.
Impact: To date we have served over 10,000 meals to 6,000 guests saving 13 tonnes of food from going to waste. That’s the carbon dioxide equivalent of driving five times round the earth’s equator.
Why we are fundraising
- The need for food is increasing due to the cost of living crisis, and around one in six (17%) parents in London have children already living in low or very low food security.
- People are having to decide between the cost of food or fuel to heat their homes, and more and more people in Lewisham are likely to need extra support over the coming months.
- We know from speaking to our guests how important our project is to the community and we rely on fundraising and wonderful volunteers to keep providing hot meals to people each week.
- Given the increasing need for food and warm spaces, we would like to develop a second meal during the week, to offer an extra opportunity for people to get a nutritious hot meal and spend time in good company with others.
Any donation big or small would be grateful appreciated.
