We run over 15 different group sessions per month, plus offering individual support to families if they need a little more time than we can offer in a group session. We run separate sessions for different age groups: 0 – 3, 3 – 5, 4 -9 and 9+. As the age ranges increase, the sessions become more structured and the activities more advanced, such as drumming workshops and climbing activities for children ages 9+. We also run 9 speech and language groups per month.
Why they need our serviceAll of the children and young people that we support have Down syndrome and associated learning, physical and communication delays. As a result of these delays it is often more difficult for the children and young people to integrate in social settings, leading to a level of social isolation. Our groups offering a range of social opportunities and activities in a safe and familiar setting to enable children to grow in confidence and self- esteem and reduce social isolation.
Plan and expected resultsWe want to offer a welcoming, equal and inclusive environment for everyone to enjoy and benefit from that has the needs of the families that we support at its core. Our aims are to improve the lives and opportunities of children and young people with Down Syndrome in Leeds by offering regular groups and activities, individual support and advocacy for families, raising awareness and challenging preconceptions in the wider community.
