In the early hours of this morning (9/04/15) someone broke into the Joyce Layland LGBT Centre. No one was hurt and while we are fairly sure nothing valuable was taken, both our outside and inner doors to the Centre were kicked in.
Everyone is still a little bit shocked as it's an awful thing to happen, however we really need your help, support and kind donations to restore our doors as soon as possible so that Sidney Street cafe can continue serving delicious food and our user groups can use the space safely and without fear. The money you contribute will also pay for new sets of keys for life-saving groups who use the LGBT Centre. *
For many people the Joyce Layland LGBT Centre is a home away from home, myself included as someone who has been involved with and worked at the LGBT for a number of years and is passionate about keeping it going, there's really no where quite like it. It's a space where people can feel safe to be their true selves and have a break from an outside world where they may be subject to homophobia, biphobic and transphobic bullying. We are volunteer led and the interests and needs of the LGBT community are at the heart of everything we do.
So please dig deep, encourage other folk to donate, bake some delicious things to sell at work, do something silly to help us buy a new door!
*if we exceed our target, any funds extra will be used to help us continue our work in the LGBT Centre and provide for the groups that use our Centre
