We created 8 group walks as a healthy activity for young people aged 16-35 recovering from mental health problems, specifically hospitalisation from psychosis. As part of the walks we worked creatively with the group to create products in response to the walking experience. These included a short film expressing the positive aspects of walking; positive activities that can be undertaken as part of a walk such as foraging, healthy picnic making. We hope to extend this practise to other groups.
Why they need our serviceWe have been walking with a group of young people in Corby over the spring/early summer 2011. Feedback from the group showed that they found the walks beneficial for their wellbeing. For each walk we had more and more people joining us as the word spread about the benefits of the walk for young people with mental health problems. They also found the walks sociable and made new friends in a supportive and non-stigmatising environment. The group have expressed an interest in doing more walks.
Plan and expected resultsHealthier, happier, fitter participants, a series of documented interventions that help people engage with the things of beauty or interest around them, a short film to conjure light thoughts when the dark days draw in, guerilla gardening experiences, new friendships, foraging experience. Enhanced self esteem and increased wellbeing. An exhibition which will help to encourage more people in the area to go on their own walks and see the benefits of walking emotionally and physically.
