Making Waves is a weekly 1.5-hour session during term time offering professional youth dance training for young people aged 13 – 18 years (up to 25 with disabilities) looking to advance their skills, knowledge and career in dance or those seeking support and guidance on further education opportunities.

Our sessions are aimed to create an open and professional atmosphere where you can gain real-life experience learning, making and performing whilst providing the opportunity to follow your own intuition; helping your confidence and independence flourish.

Sessions take place at Oxford House Creative Hub, 29 Manor Street, PL1 1TW from 5.30pm to 7pm. If you are interested in joining please email: classes@eximdance.org.uk.

In addition to the weekly sessions the following wrap around activity will be offered:

  • The group will be invited to watch student and professional dance performance dance performances at local venues such as Theatre Royal, Barbican Theatre and The House
  • We will facilitate discussions before and after each performance to build confidence and expand knowledge of contemporary dance
  • Develop young people’s relationship with the University of Plymouth by attending tours of the facilities and performing twice a year
  • Young people can access Accredited Training Courses such as Arts Award & Dance Leaders
  • Students will be supported through stages of employability, progressing into Further Education and Higher Education.

Why they need our service

Exim have developed a responsive way of working with young people to facilitate dance that offers the young people the space and time to develop their creative voice. As well as leading technique we will work creatively and choreographically. The core lead practitioners are all graduates of Plymouth University and the assistant practitioners will be current students/ recent graduates, and therefore have lived experience of the course and this is embedded in our practice.

Plan and expected results

Working with young people aged 13 -18 years over 1-3 years will have a huge impact of them and their futures. In our experience of working with and developing young people it is this amount of investment of time that is needed to make a real impact.

Testimonial: "I do these classes so that I can gain confidence in order to be a dance teacher. I enjoy going to the sessions because I love making new friends and having teaching opportunities to see what it’s like for my future job. Our voices get heard and changes are made to fit what is best for us."
