Oceans are the heartbeat of our planet and essential to sustaining life. They need our help! Plastic is a human innovation that now poses a substantial problem to our environment. Designed to last a lifetime, commonly used plastics are not fully biodegradable. Each year, more than half of the plastic produced is single use, such as take-away coffee cups. This means it is used once (for an average of 5-10 minutes) and then thrown away. Much of this plastic waste enters the ocean (eight million tons annually), where it can prove fatal to the planet. It’s hugely detrimental to biodiversity, ecosystems, food security and the food chain. Plastic pollution is a global crisis - with the potential to impact all, from seabirds to humans. I love life and want to help protect the planet for future generations. I’ve been inspired by those who take action; good causes and volunteers, family who live by the sea, recycling efforts in Mumbai slums, eco-conscious brands and of course Blue Planet! It’s my turn to make a stand. I’m running the London Marathon to raise funds to support an inspiring local charity that is making waves in the fight against plastic. Rame Peninsula Beach Care (RPBC) is a team of marine heroes – local volunteers raising awareness and tackling ocean plastics. They carry out regular beach cleans, removing hundreds of sacks of debris from the Cornish coastline. Plastic collected is made into artwork, rather than re-entering landfill. They are also involved in lots of other awesome projects, including; marine litter surveys, various scientific studies and lobbying for the Cornish Plastic Pollution Coalition. As individuals, we are all consumers of plastic and can make small changes that make a real difference. All donations will be massively appreciated, going towards a very worthy charity that will value every penny!
