100km (63 miles) for a 9 year-old (and a rather overweight middle-aged man) is not easy, but we've nearly finished!
After our plan to walk the 100km over 5 days was thwarted by the Nene flooding at Easter we started the walk in May. Over 3 consecutive days we walked 60km, that was 20km every day, taking us from Peterborough to Woodford, near Kettering. We will walk the final 40km from Woodford to Northampton, via Wellingborough, on 14 and 15 July.
Having walked 60km in three days we know how hard it is, especially for Elliott's shorter legs, but it was his idea! Read below to see how he came up with it...
Earlier this year I was in Nene Wetlands Visitors Centre at Rushden Lakes with my 2 eldest sons. The eldest, Elliott, was taken by the mural of the Nene Valley they have on the wall, showing the river from Northampton to Peterborough. He suddenly asked if he could walk all of it, from Peterborough to Northampton during the Easter holidays so with too little thought I said 'why not.'
Elliott is a very compassionate young man, always trying to help those less fortunate than himself, and he's decided he'd like to use the walk to raise funds for Northamptonshire Rights and Equality Council (NREC). Elliott will be walking the roughly 45 miles of the Nene Way from Peterborough to Kettering during the Easter holidays and intends to complete it in 4 days.
